UPDATE 6/01/08 on the 19 Seeley Collies Rescued in Upstate NY
Statement by AWCA President Jean Levitt
As we in AWCA move happily into summer activities with our Collies, we look longingly over our shoulders at the Collies still held in crates in the attic at the SPCA of Upstate New York located in Queensbury.
We have learned that the little dogs confiscated on April 30, 2008 from a home in Hartford, NY are now stored in a room near the Collies in the SPCA attic, having succumbed to kennel cough. This highly contagious airborne illness is just one draft away from the Collies.
We do have some good news to report concerning the spinning Collie adopted by our volunteer Team Leader last January (see the January 13 report and the May 11 update). He has graduated from his Obedience Level I class! We're happy to share this picture with you.
The goal of AWCA -- the American Working Collie Association -- for rescue Collies is to rehabilitate them and help them into a healthy, happy, productive situation for the rest of their lives. The peculiar circumstances in which animals are held and denied adoption at this SPCA saddens the animal loving community. When Collies are held in this manner, not only is the Collie community saddened, we are outraged.
Collies have been held in crates in the attic at the SPCA for 229 days.
Calmly,
Jean Levitt
