UPDATE 7/8/03 on the Montana Collies

Statement by AWCA President Jean Levitt, reporting from Camp Collie, Great Falls, MT

*Permission to crosspost*

Deputy Mike Lamey of the Toole County Sheriff’s Office has released the list of names of breeders who are receiving the 20 unaltered Montana collies according to the sentencing.  Judy Wolf of Michigan, 6 collies including “Winter,” the blue-headed white; Gwen Hogge Towne of Alaska, 7 collies; Dixie Hagen of Lynden, WA, 2 collies; Evelyn Forester of Lynden, WA, 2 collies; Jane Rocha of Cedro-Woolley, WA, 2 collies; 2 breeders have been approved for the 1 remaining dog:  Dr. Suzannae Harvey, DVM, Buffalo, OK, or Becky Moss Heart of Nashville, KS.

The adoption team is happy to report that dogs are daily being released into carefully screened, loving homes after their spay/neuter surgeries at local veterinary hospitals.  Many of these adopters are right in the Shelby and Great Falls communities where the dogs have been housed for the last 8 months.  The adopters are continuing to volunteer a few hours at Camp Collie, and we get daily reports on how their new family member is doing.  It has been so exciting to visit some of these homes and see a Montana collie smelling geraniums on their patio and resting beside the family cat, which is our dream for all of them.  As persons from the adoption lists receive their applications and come to Camp Collie to meet the dogs, we get to meet all of them, interview them, screen them, perform home checks.

There are many more applicants than there are collies.  Our hope is that all collies will be placed by the first week in August in carefully screened homes.  In the unlikely event that there are any dogs not placed by August 15th when the building must close, they will be embraced by the collie community and fostered in carefully selected collie rescue homes.  You can count on that!

Calmly,

Jean Levitt, President AWCA
